Keep the transparent background of a WebP graphic
Logos, icons, stickers and product cut-outs saved from websites are often WebP files with a transparent background. Some editors, office programs and design tools do not open WebP. Converting WebP to PNG gives you a file that these tools accept, and the transparent areas stay transparent.
- Place a logo on a colored slide or document without a white rectangle behind it.
- Edit a sticker or icon in a program that does not open WebP.
- Reuse a product cut-out in a collage or an online shop listing.
What the PNG keeps from the WebP
- Transparency
- Kept. The PNG has the same transparent areas as the WebP.
- Photos (lossy WebP)
- Saved losslessly in the PNG, with "Optimize images" on or off.
- Graphics (lossless WebP)
- Lossless with "Optimize images" off. With it on, Pixcon reduces the color palette and keeps the result only if the file gets smaller.
- Lost detail
- Not restored. The PNG cannot recover detail that lossy WebP compression removed.
- Animation
- Not kept. An animated WebP becomes one still PNG of its first frame.
- File size
- Can be larger than the WebP, because PNG compression is lossless.
Settings for logos, icons and stickers
- Turn off "Optimize images" when the exact colors of a logo or brand graphic matter. With it on, Pixcon may use fewer colors in a graphic to make the PNG smaller.
- Choose "Resize" and enter a "Width:" or "Height:" of up to 4096 px to get the graphic at the size you need. Keep "Maintain Aspect Ratio" on so that the shape is not stretched.
- Enlarging a small sticker with "Resize" gives a bigger PNG, but it does not add detail.
- To make an icon file from the finished PNG, use PNG to ICO, which saves one icon at a standard size.
Photos without transparent areas can be converted with WebP to JPG instead. To turn PNG graphics back into WebP for a website, use PNG to WebP.
WebP to PNG: transparency, file size and stickers
Does converting WebP to PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. Pixcon keeps the transparent areas of the WebP in the PNG. A logo or sticker can then be placed on any background without a white rectangle.
Why is the PNG larger than the WebP file?
PNG compression is lossless, so the PNG stores every pixel of the picture. A lossy WebP removes some detail to save space, so the same image can need more space as a PNG. With "Optimize images" on, Pixcon reduces the color palette of graphics to make the PNG smaller.
Can I convert animated WebP stickers to PNG?
Only as a still picture. Pixcon turns an animated WebP sticker into one PNG made from its first frame, so the PNG does not move.
Will PNG make a WebP image look better?
No. A PNG cannot add detail that the WebP does not contain. With "Optimize images" off, Pixcon saves the decoded WebP without new loss, so the PNG looks the same as the original.
