PNG to PDF for screenshots and diagrams

You have a screenshot of an error message, a chart, a diagram or a scanned page saved as PNG. A report, a support ticket or an archive needs the image as a PDF. PNG to PDF on Pixcon puts each image on a PDF page and keeps it as crisp as the original PNG.

Lossless images inside the PDF

Pixcon stores images from PNG files inside the PDF with lossless compression. JPEG compression is not used for them, so small text, thin lines and flat colors keep clean edges and show no JPEG artifacts.

Photos saved as JPG follow a different rule and are stored with JPEG compression, as explained on the JPG to PDF page.

Page size, file count and settings

Page size
The proportions of the PNG, fitted within an A4 sheet; a small PNG gives a smaller page.
Pages per PDF
One. Each PNG becomes a separate PDF file.
Joining files
Not available. Pixcon does not combine PNG images into a multi-page PDF.
File name
Kept with the .pdf extension, so chart.png becomes chart.pdf.
Settings
"Resize", "Crop" and "Optimize images" are not offered for PDF output.

Prepare a large PNG for a smaller PDF

Lossless compression keeps every pixel, so a PDF made from a large or photo-like PNG can be a big file. Make the image smaller before the PNG to PDF step.

  • Open the Resize image page and leave "Convert to:" at "Keep Original Extension". Enter a smaller value in "Width:", then convert the resized PNG to PDF on this page.
  • Turn "Optimize images" off on that page if every color of the screenshot must stay unchanged. With the switch on, Pixcon may reduce the colors of the PNG.

Questions about PNG files in PDF

Will text in my screenshot stay sharp in the PDF?

Yes. Pixcon stores the PNG inside the PDF with lossless compression instead of JPEG compression, so text and lines stay as sharp as in your screenshot. The PDF does not add detail that the PNG does not have.

Can I merge several PNG files into one PDF?

No. Pixcon makes one single-page PDF for each PNG you upload. When you convert two or more files, "Download all" saves the separate PDF files in one ZIP archive.

What page size does the PDF get?

A page with the proportions of the PNG that fits within an A4 sheet, so a wide screenshot gives a landscape page. If the PNG has small pixel dimensions, the page is smaller than A4.

Why is my PDF file large, and how can I make it smaller?

The PNG is stored losslessly, so large or photo-like images give big PDF files. Reduce the pixel size on the Resize image page before you convert. For a photo, convert the PNG to JPG first and then use JPG to PDF, where the photo is stored with JPEG compression.
