Saving a WebP image from a website as JPG
Images saved from websites are often .webp files. A photo editor, a print service or an upload form may accept only JPG and refuse the WebP file. Converting WebP to JPG gives you a copy in the format these places expect.
- Send a picture to a print service that asks for JPG files.
- Upload an image to a form or profile page that lists only JPG.
- Open a saved image in an older program that does not read WebP.
Pixcon converts the files on its servers, so you do not need to install a program on your computer or phone. You upload the WebP files in your browser and download the JPG files from the same page. If the saved file ends in .avif instead, convert it with AVIF to JPG.
What a WebP loses in the JPG copy
| WebP | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| Transparent areas | Can be transparent | Filled with white |
| Animation | Can be animated | Only the first frame, as a still image |
| Compression | Lossy or lossless | Always lossy, compressed again by Pixcon |
| File name | Original name with .webp | Same name, new extension |
Because the transparent areas turn white, a logo or sticker with a transparent background appears on a white rectangle in the JPG. When the background must stay transparent, convert WebP to PNG instead.
Choosing JPG quality and size before you upload
- Turn off "Optimize images" for the highest JPG quality, for example before printing. The JPG file is then larger.
- Leave "Optimize images" on, as it is by default, when a small file for email or an upload form matters more than fine detail.
- Choose "Resize" and enter a "Width:" of up to 4096 px to shrink a very large image in the same step. With "Maintain Aspect Ratio" on, Pixcon calculates the height for you.
- Change these options before adding the files, because the values set at that moment apply to the whole upload.
- After several files are converted, get them all in one ZIP archive with "Download all".
Questions about converting WebP to JPG
Why are images from websites saved as WebP?
Many websites deliver their images in the WebP format, and the browser saves an image in the format the website sent. The file name then ends in .webp, even when the page showed an ordinary photo.
What happens to transparency when I convert WebP to JPG?
Transparent areas turn white. JPG cannot store transparency, so Pixcon places the image on a white background when it saves the JPG.
Can I convert an animated WebP to JPG?
Yes, but the JPG is a still picture. Pixcon converts only the first frame of an animated WebP, and the other frames are not included.
Does converting WebP to JPG lose quality?
Some fine detail can change, because Pixcon compresses the image again with lossy JPG compression. With "Optimize images" off, Pixcon uses its highest JPG quality setting. With it on, Pixcon compresses the JPG more strongly to make the file smaller.
